Homemade Elderberry Syrup
The first time I heard the words “Elderberry Syrup” I was watching an episode of The Walking Dead. Sweet old Hershel was talking about how great it would be to help protect themselves from that crazy random zombie virus. To be real honest with you, I didn’t even know it was a real thing. I mean…I was watching a zombie show. Once I pulled myself out from under a rock I started reading about the amazing benefits of this so called syrup. I tend to shy away from most DIY things but after reading over a few different recipes I felt confident that this would be an easy task. I’m all about naturally supporting my family’s immune systems.
Some quick facts about Elderberries:
- Strengthens immune systems
- Boosts the digestive system
- Keeps cholesterol under control
- Maintains bone health
- Keeps infections at bay
- Keeps the respiratory system healthy
- Extremely high in Vitamin C, flavonoids and virus-fighting proteins
The list goes on! Go make ya some!
Homemade Elderberry Syrup
- 3 ½ cups water
- 2/3 cup dried elderberries (I used these)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon powder
- ½ tsp ground clove powder (whole cloves can be used as well)
- 2 Tbsp fresh or dried ginger root (I used fresh grated)
- 1 cup raw local honey
Add water to a medium sized saucepan. Add elderberries, cinnamon, clove, and ginger. DO NOT add honey at this time. The heat will destroy the benefits. Bring mixture to a boil then cover and reduce to a simmer. Leave simmering for about 45-60 minutes, or however long it takes to reduce by almost half.
Once reduced, remove from heat and let cool a bit. Once cool enough to handle, pour through strainer into a glass bowl (I used a large bowl with spout for easy pouring). I then lightly pressed with a fork to get all the elderberry juice goodness. Toss the leftover berries and let the liquid cool to lukewarm. Add 1 cup of honey and stir until well mixed. Pour into a 16oz sized jar or bottle.
How to use: ½ - 1 tsp for kids and ½ -1 Tbsp for adults daily. If you are feeling yucky, you can take a dose every 2-3 hours until you feel better!
You want to store your Elderberry Syrup in the refrigerator. It will last several months if properly stored. You also can freeze in an ice cube tray and thaw as needed. I can’t wait to make some fun recipes for the kids using this syrup! I have some ideas for gummies and popsicles!
Enjoy!
